Travel Requirements
Passport, visa and vaccination guidance for the world's most popular cruise destinations.
Important: entry rules change frequently and depend on your nationality. Treat this page as a planning starting point, then confirm requirements with your cruise line and official government sources before you travel.
Documents checklist
Passport (check expiry now — renewals can take weeks), boarding passes, travel insurance, and copies stored separately from the originals.
Check every port, not just the embarkation port
Requirements follow the countries you visit, including tender ports and short stops. Your cruise line's check-in process will confirm details for your sailing.
Health prep
See a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before departure for destination-specific advice; carry prescriptions in original containers with a doctor's letter.
When in doubt, ask
Cruise line check-in and your embassy's travel pages are the authoritative sources — never rely on forum rumors for entry rules.
Requirements by destination
Caribbean
Passport
Valid passport recommended for all sailings (required for non-US citizens). US citizens on closed-loop cruises from US ports may sail with passport card or birth certificate + ID — but a passport is strongly advised in case of emergencies.
Visa
Not required for US, EU and most Western passport holders on standard itineraries. Some nationalities need a US visa for US port calls.
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations. Routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus) should be current. Hepatitis A is occasionally recommended.
Mediterranean
Passport
Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date, with 2+ blank pages.
Visa
Schengen-area itineraries: visa-free for up to 90 days for US, UK, Canadian and most EU passport holders. Some nationalities require a Schengen visa covering every port country.
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations. Routine vaccines current; hepatitis A recommended for longer stays.
Alaska
Passport
US citizens sailing round-trip from US ports need only a government photo ID (18+) and birth certificate. Passports required for all non-US citizens.
Visa
US visa or ESTA required for non-US citizens. Canadian port calls may require a Canadian eTA for visa-exempt nationalities.
Vaccinations
None required.
Northern Europe
Passport
Passport valid 6+ months beyond return. Baltic itineraries typically visit multiple Schengen countries.
Visa
Schengen rules apply for most ports; Russia port calls (rare) historically required a visa unless on an organized shore excursion.
Vaccinations
None required. Routine vaccines current.
Asia
Passport
Passport valid 6+ months beyond return with blank pages for entry stamps at each port.
Visa
Varies sharply by country: Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to many passports; China and Vietnam typically require visas arranged in advance.
Vaccinations
Varies by country — yellow fever certificate may be requested if arriving from an endemic region; hepatitis A/typhoid often recommended. Confirm with a travel clinic.
Transatlantic & World Cruises
Passport
Passport valid 6+ months beyond the entire voyage — some segments require more.
Visa
A world cruise may require several visas obtained before departure; cruise lines publish a country-by-country list around final payment.
Vaccinations
Yellow fever certificates are required for some African and South American port calls. Book a travel-medicine consultation early.
