Cruise Planning Guide
Six steps from daydream to departure — your complete roadmap to a perfectly planned cruise.
Plan once, sail right
A great cruise doesn't start at the gangway — it starts months before, with smart choices about destination, timing and budget. This guide walks you through every decision, with shortcuts to the tools on our site that make each step effortless.
Follow the six steps in order, or jump straight to the step you're on. Fair winds and following seas!

1. Choose your destination
Match the region to your travel style — the Caribbean for beaches, Alaska for glaciers, the Mediterranean for culture. Browse by region to see every sailing.
2. Set your budget
Remember the fare is per person, double occupancy, before port fees and gratuities. A balcony upgrade costs more per night on short sailings — decide what matters to you.
3. Pick your timing
Book 6–18 months ahead for the best cabin choice, or under 90 days for last-minute price drops. Wave Season (January–March) brings the year's biggest promotions.
4. Choose your ship
Big megaships pack waterparks and entertainment; smaller vessels reach ports the giants can't. Research the fleet before you commit to a sailing.
5. Sort your documents
Check passport validity (6+ months beyond your return), visa needs and vaccination rules for every country on your itinerary — well before the pier.
6. Pack like a pro
Use our climate-tailored checklist so nothing gets left behind — from seasickness remedies to formal-night outfits.
