Dining Options

From grand main dining rooms to midnight pizza — how eating and drinking works on a cruise ship.

Main dining room

The classic cruise experience: an elegant multi-course dinner with a rotating menu each night. Choose traditional seating (fixed time and tablemates) or flexible 'anytime' dining. Breakfast and lunch are also served here on most lines.

Buffet & casual counters

The go-to for relaxed, quick meals — expansive breakfasts, made-to-order stations, and themed dinners. Open long hours and perfect for port days when you're back on board ravenous. Grab-and-go cafes serve sandwiches, pastries, and pizza around the clock.

Specialty restaurants

Upscale venues with a cover charge ($20–$60 per person, depending on the line): steakhouses, Italian trattorias, sushi bars, hibachi grills, and chef's-table tasting menus. Smaller rooms, slower pace, and many cruisers' favorite part of the voyage.

Bars & lounges

From poolside margaritas to martini lounges, wine bars, and coffee cafés. Drink packages can be worth it if you enjoy several beverages a day — do the math before you buy, and remember many lines ban bringing your own alcohol aboard.

Room service & late-night bites

Most lines offer complimentary room service for basic items (continental breakfast, sandwiches), while premium menus carry a small fee. Midnight buffets and late-night pizza are traditions on many ships — perfect after a show.

Dietary needs

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal, and allergy-friendly meals are available fleet-wide — but tell the cruise line when you book and confirm with the maître d' on day one. Indian, low-sodium, and kids' menus are common too.

Dining pro tips

  • Book specialty restaurants for the first night or a port day — embarkation evening is when they're emptiest, and many lines offer first-night discounts.
  • Main dining room reservations (if your line uses them) open weeks before sailing — reserve early for popular times.
  • Windjammers and pool grills don't need reservations — build port-day lunches around them.
  • On most lines, soda, specialty coffee, and alcohol cost extra unless you have a package; tap water, iced tea, and lemonade in the buffet are free.
